Absolutely delicious and easy recipe. I made it for a pot luck at work and everyone loved it and asked for the recipe. Definitely will be making this again. Thanks for sharing the recipe
Do you use the same size crock pot for each recipe? And if so, what size crock pot did you use for this one? It looks like you added nuts. I’m guessing you added to the cake portion, right?
Hello Laura! I do not use the same size crock pot for each recipe. I have five different size crock pots, and on this one I used my 4 quart crock pot. Yes I did add nuts and I poured about half the cake mix in and sprinkled with nuts, and topped them with the rest of the cake mix, and nuts if you’d like. Happy Crocking!
What is the apple mixture?
Leslie, in the ingredients you will see the apple mixture, apple pie filling, cinnamon and brown sugar. Happy Crocking!
so do you need 3 kind of cake mixes or just 18oz total?
Hi Rikki! Just 18 oz total. You can use 2 of the Jiffy Mixes! Happy Crocking!
What would be the time on Low instead of on High? In the apple mixture do you mean to say “either apply pie filling or apple slices broken up” or “apple pie filling with the apple slices broken up”? Would I need to make up homemade pie filling apples or would fresh apple slices do? For those who don’t like preboxed mixes and prefer to make everything from scratch, what would be the ingredients for the yellow cake mix? I would love to make this late at night and have it ready for morning breakfast if possible.
Laurrel to make it on Low, you would most likely add just a couple hours, as Low crocks at the same temperature as High, the only difference is the time it takes to get it to the temperature. As High gets there much quicker. The Apple pie filling is used in this recipe, and you should cut the slices in smaller pieces. If you want to use homemade pie filling, I suggest you cook it first, as the apple slices would most likely not get done?? I got the following recipe on-line, and have not made it, but this would… Read more »
Laurrel, If crocked on Low, I would add a couple hours to the time. The only difference between Low and High is the amount of time it takes to get to the crock temperature. High gets there very fast and Low gradually gets to the desired temperature to crock. The ingredients for the apple pie mixture are listed under Apple Mixture in the ingredients, adding brown sugar and cinnamon. If you want to make your own I would cook it first, as the apple slices may not cook through. If you also want to make your cake mix from scratch,… Read more »
Some crock pots are combo slow cooker/ roasters which will go from 150 degrees to 450 degrees with settings for slow cook, roast, Bake, etc.
is there a way to use fresh apples wjth this recipe?
Kate, I have not attempted it with fresh apples, as I am afraid the apples would not get done. If you do make it this way, I would cut the apples in very tiny pieces to help it cook as much as possible. Please post back if you use the fresh apples. Happy Crocking!
I tried several times to ‘subscribe’ to this website, but as soon as I put in my email addy, it flips me to Amazon to buy a crock pot. I don’t need one, I have several. Just want to subscribe. Can I just do that?
Ruth, When you say subscribe, I am not sure where you are entering your e-mail address? Our site getcrocked.com does not have a subscription. If you want to also visit us on my Facebook page, all you need to do is like our Facebook page for Crock Pot Girl. Hope this helps you Ruth, thanks for sending me your message.

Can this be made in a bigger oval crockpot? Or does it have to be the smaller 4qt? I have a 6qt oval one and would love to make this, but have absolutely no kitchen space for another crock pot.
Michelle, If you make this in a larger slow cooker I would double the recipe, as the rule of thumb is that the slow cooker should be 1/2 to 2/3 full to crock properly. Please post back as I don’t know of anyone that has doubled this recipe, the cooking time will stay the same. Anxious to hear! 🙂 Happy Crocking!
The picture looks like this was made in a Bundt pan. Is that right?
Hi Jessica, it was made in a round slow cooker. Happy Crocking! 🙂
Hi I cooked this for the first time and it took 8 hrs to cook. I wonder what I did wrong. I followed recipe I did have to make the cake batter from scratch because I could not find jiffy yellow cake mix at any of the stores near me. I used your recipe for cake batter. My only thought is my crock pot may be off or too big. I think its 5 quart but not sure since its very old and doesn’t say anywhere on pot the size. Do you have any ideas why it took so long?… Read more »
Katie it sounds like your slow cooker may not be crocking properly. It is important for a slow cooker to crock properly. You may want to test your slow cooker. Happy to share a link with you: http://www3.ag.purdue.edu/counties/vanderburgh/Documents/CFS/2010%20Making%20a%20Difference%20Lessons/Testing%20Your%20Slow%20Cooker.pdf
Ok thanks for the link I will test it. I actually cook in it all the time and everything turns out fine this was the first time it didn’t. Its oval and I would say a good size but like I said not sure the size. Could it be that its too big? Would doubling the recipe work better? Thanks again for all your recipes I really like your site. We just ate the apple oatmeal for breakfast today and it was yummy.
Just finished this & it looks dee-lish!!!
Couple of changes:
1) Used 3 finely chopped apples instead of the pie filling and then added 1 T Lemon Juice
2) Replaced the Jiffy cake mixes with:
-2 C Flour, 1 1/4 c Sugar, 1 T Baking Powder, 1/2 c Nonfat Dry Milk
Anxiously waiting for it to cool to eat!!!!
Hi Jenn-
Thank you SO much for posting the nutritional info! I saw that it was posted by serving size- how many servings does this recipe make?
Thank you,
Cecily
Happy to assist Ceclly! You will find the serving size on the upper right hand corner of each recipe page, but happy to share this recipes serves 6. 🙂 Happy Crocking!
Jenn, I love every single one of your recipes that I’ve tried–and I’ve tried a LOT!!! For this Apple Pie Coffee Cake, how would you recommend using fresh apples? Mixing them with sugar and cinnamon? We did our annual apple picking outing and I’m looking for good uses for them! Thanks for your help!
WOW Kelly thank you so much! Now as far as the Apples go you may want to pre-cook them in the sugar and cinnamon a little. As you know the canned apples are pre-cooked. But of course the fresh apples will be so much better. Happy Crocking!
[…] Apple Pie Coffee Cake Why hasn’t this been in our lives sooner? Obviously this should be your go-to fall weather […]
Everything you need to know to make this delicious recipe is above, yet there are comment after comment asking stupid questions. I would suggest reading the whole thing and if you can’t comprehend a simple recipe I feel sorry for ya!!
Would really like to see scratch substitutes for prepared ingredients ie., boxed cake mix & canned soup. I pass on so many recipes because of the preservative, salt & sugar content of prepared food ingredients. Prepared food is also so much more expensive than the ingredients that make it up.
