Best Slow Cooker Roast EVER was shared by Facebook friend Jen B. D., and she says it is a favorite of hers and her family! We made it and have to agree, this is one of the best roasts ever. Please let us know how you like it in the comments below!
- If carrots and potatoes are wanted, cut them to your liking and put in the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Place Roast on top of vegetables.
- Sprinkle all 3 spice envelopes (ranch, Italian and gravy) on top of the roast.
- Add the water, adjust for the size of the roast.
- Cover. Cook on Low for 6-10 hours until tender and veggies cooked through.
NOTE: It is better to cook the roast longer. (can use a meat thermometer to make sure roast is done)
Happy Crocking!

Nutritional facts using a 3 pound roast!
Made this last Sunday. I must say this is the best tasting roast I have made in a long time. Delicious and simple.
What is the best cut of meat to use.?
Michelle everyone has their preference. Some like a chuck roast, but my favorite would be the bottom cut, or as we would say in the Midwest a Rump Roast. Enjoy and Happy Crocking!
This is my favorite roast recipe! Been making it for years. But along with the cup of water, add a can of Coke (or Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, whatever you have). Sounds a little weird, but it makes it so tender! Falls apart! Just try it, you will be amazed!
I made this today using a 4 lb. chuck roast. There was not a bite left. Simply delicious.
It happens every time Tricia! So glad your family enjoyed! 🙂
I am trying this tonight and will let yall know how it goes!!
Do you have to brown the roast before adding to the crockpot?
You do not Jessica but if you would like to you certainly can. It will add flavor, but really not necessary! Enjoy and Happy Crocking!
Thank you for the quick response! I cooked it last night and it is the bomb dot com! About to eat another bowl now! Thanks for the recipe! Def. making again!
How much water should you use, just enough to cove the roast, or more or less?
This recipe works great with the water amount suggested in the ingredients list! Happy Crocking!
should there just be the amount of water mentioned in the crockpot or should the water cover the veggies or the roast? Thanks.
Amy the amount of the water mentioned is the amount you should use. Happy Crocking!
im going to make your recipe today,it sounds absolutly delish!! I also found one on facebook but it had no pkg of Italian and didn’t call for any water, it also called for five pepperoncini peppers and a stick of butter on top ( sounds a bit much ewww GAK) lol. Have you tried this one yourself?
Hi Noreen, I have not made the one with a stick of butter on top, I too think it is a bit much, but the Pepperoncini Peppers would give the roast a great flavor. Enjoy and Happy Crocking!
I make this all the time. I thicken the gravy and when done. Last time I chopped up the left overs mixed with the gravy ,added veggies and topped with mashed potatoes to make the best shepard pie ever.
This makes the best roast ever I let my roast cook at least 10 hrs the last 3 to 4 hrs I but the potatoes and carrots in sometimes the last hour I put rice makes a great beef tip to
I’m finding it tough to buy the envelopes of dressing mix….where do you get yours please and thank you. 🙂
Hi Joanne, I get mine in the grocery store where they have all the spices, and they also have boxes of 3 in a box where you find your dressings. Hope this helps! You can also get them on line. Happy Crocking!
Do you moisten the spices or will they moisten while cooking?
Hi Peggy, they will moisten when they are cooking, but several people say they mix them with the water them pour them over the roast! Completely up to you! Everyone has their own preference. Happy Crocking!
This sounds delicious but don’t the potatoes and carrots turn to mush by cooking it for so long?
Rose this recipe is delicious! If you don’t want them so soft, you should add them to the top of the roast. This helps as them won’t be sitting in the broth the whole time they are crocking! 🙂
Instead of using the 3 seasoning packets, could I just add the separate seasonings myself? If so, which specific seasonings & what measurements? The seasoning packets have a lot of salt, and most have artificial, nasty ingredients, so I’d like to season myself to control salt & avoid nasty chemicals.
As another option, could I use bottled Italian or Ranch dressing, and jared gravy? What about beef broth as an option for flavor in lieu of the water?
I’m just looking for other seasoning options besides the packets as I just never use those.
If you put the veggies on top will they still cook ok, or should I just put them on the bottom??
Hello Jennifer! It is all a matter of preference… Some people like their vegetables a little crunchy, and some like them softer. So if you like them crunchy, you may want them on top! Thanks for the question, and Happy Crocking!

If i add more vegetables should i add more water or anything? 1/2 lb doesn’t sound like enough for my family. LOL
You shouldn’t need more water or broth, but it never hurts to add more, so you should make this recipe your own, that’s the fun of cooking! Happy Crocking!
Grave? S/b gravy
Thank YOU Jennifer!
Can you us an eye round roast ?
Diane make this recipe your own… I’m sure it will be delicious! Happy Crocking!
Just threw it all together for a Turkey-free Thanksgiving and very excited! However, will it work on high for 4-6 hours?
Thanks!
I’m sure you have already make it on high, but it is okay to make on high.. Happy Crocking!
You dont metion how much water is needed. Its bot in the invredients
The recipe calls for 1 – 1 1/2 cups of water depending on the size of the roast! Thanks for the question, and Happy Crocking!
I just made this today with a 3 pound chuck roast. It is perfect at 6 hours. Fall apart tender and super flavorful. Will definitely make again.
Can I use liquid seasoning like instead of the packet then use the bottle dressing instead
Would it be okay to add a bottle of Guinness Stout beer and use less water?
OMG – this is SO good! I made it yesterday while I was visiting my Mom so my boys would have dinner. There was a small bowl of leftovers and that was just because the boys didn’t want to be rude so they left me some!! Cannot wait to make this again. It is easy and hearty. A perfect year-round meal! 🙂
