Talk about melting in your mouth! Slow Cooker 3-Packet Beef Roast is so easy to prepare, and the flavor is hard to top. This is sure to be a winner in your house. Enjoy!
- Trim roast of fat and place it into a 6 quart slow cooker.
- Combine the contents of all 3 packets. to create a dry mix
- Pour the dry mix over top of the roast. Flip the roast over a few times to get it covered with seasonings on all sides.
- Top with 1 cup of water.
- Optional: Add in chopped potatoes, onion, carrots, and celery, if desired.
- Cover. Cook on Low for 8.5 hours, or on High for 4.5 – 5.5 hours.
- 30 minutes before serving, add an additional 2 cups of water and set slow cooker to High.
NOTE: Waiting to add the last 2 cups of water will make a juicy gravy. If you want a little thicker gravy, dissolve a tablespoon of corn starch in warm water, and add slowly to get desired consistency.
Happy Crocking!
Could you do this recipe with the ranch and the Italian in the bottle? I don’t like to buy the packets of seasoning due to MSG being in most of them. If so, how much would you suggest for both? Thank you!
Gypsy you can, you should eliminate the water, and use the bottled salad dressing to equal the water of 3 cups. Hope this helps, and Happy Crocking!
Please email me which 3 packets to use in the 3 packet roast!!
Thank you
Hi Cindi… the packets are listed in the ingredients in the center of the page, but happy to share, 1.0 oz. Ranch Salad Dressing & Seasoning Mix,
.6 oz. Italian salad dressing mix, and 1.13 oz. McCormick’s Grill Mates packet, Peppercorn & Garlic… Happy Crocking!
Is 1 cup of water enough for the potatoes and carrots to cook through if we do opt for that option?
Michele, you don’t want to use too much water when cooking in the crock pot, as it will boil the meat and make it tough. Put the potatoes and carrots on the bottom of the pot, under the meat, and the meat will be tender and delicious and the veggies will have more of the juice and flavors. Also, always spray your pot with cooking spray before adding food, it makes clean-up so much easier! xx
Can I use pork with this recepie?
Susie I would imagine it would be very good.. Let us know how it turned out when you make it! 😉
Awesome!! I’ll post tomorrow night!! 🙂
does the meat need to be thawed?
Hi Melissa you don’t need to thaw this roast, but it will most likely take an hour or two longer to crock. You can also use a meat thermometer to check the roast to be sure it is done. Hope this helps and Happy Crocking!
Well that works even better because I’m gone to work over 9 hours! Thank you. Also I am going to use deer roast. we’ll see how it goes
I can’t eat Garlic or hot pepper spices. Bother my stomach cause it is very bad. Any ideas for a substititute? Thank you!!
Melissa you should use spices that don’t bother you. I would eliminate any spice that bothers you.
I live in Northrtn Ireland I don t know if any of the packet mixes are available to buy here do you know of equivalent packs I can buy here thank you x
I’m crocking it right now as I post! I used a packet called “Crock Pot savory Pot roast seasoning mix” only bcuz I didn’t find the Italian dry seasoning. I used1 cup water with caoursly cut up carrots, onion, bell pepper, and celery n potatoes. But was inspired by your site! I hope turns out great! : ))
I made this last night, and it was DELICIOUS! I used all the ingredients listed but I did not use all of it in the meat and it was still very flaverful. My 4 year old daughter asked for seconds which was shocking because she’s a light eater. My brother in law was over and he had a regular plate then made a sandwich of it. I usually have roast for 3 days them throw out out, however I was scared last night that there would be no left overs.
I used Zesty Italian instead of Regular Italian. Opps. Lets hope it works. Susan
I made this yesterday and it was really good, particularly the vegetables! I put onions, baby carrots, celery, and red potatoes on the bottom of the crock pot. I followed the rest of the instructions per the recipe (but used a different McCormick’s because I couldn’t find the one it called for). When I tried to pull the meat out of the slow cooker, it fell apart! It was so tender and juicy! The veggies and potatoes were cooked very nicely and had a ton of flavor. There was so much broth in the pot that I reserved some in… Read more »
I substitute 1/4 c powdered buttermilk ( found in the grocery baking aisle), Plus 1/2 teas each of garlic and onion powder. I’m sure one could look at the ingredients and find a substitute for the Italian dressing as well.
Making this now!!! Can’t wait to try it!!! I couldn’t find the grill mate so I just used garlic powder and peppercorn pepper separately . I also added a little bit of onion powder. Hope it comes out great!!!!
Do you brown the roast before you put it in the crock pot? Thanks!
It is a personal preference Sarah, I like to brown my roast first as I believe it adds flavor… Completely up to you! Enjoy and Happy Crocking! 🙂
I made this tonight and it was really good. However, the sauce turned out to have a really peppery flavor. This wasn’t a problem for me but some members of my family couldn’t handle the spice of it. I’ll most likely be using half the packet of the McCormick garlic and peppercorn seasoning next time. I also did it on high for 4 hours and I think it would have been more tender had I done it on low for 8. Overall though, good combo of flavors and I would definitely recommend adding the veggies!
Made this for dinner last night and it was awesome. Best pot roast ever! The only variation I made was instead of using the McCormicks pprcrn. Garlic I used a McCormicks Montreal Ssng pckt. Delish and tender.
BTW, I love your site. The recipies have given my crockpot new life.Thank you!
Thank you Lisa for the kind words… always love hearing this! Music to my ears! 🙂
I have done this recipe before it’s very tasty,
just wondering would it be as good with chicken thighs?
I made this the other night and it was very good! I added all the optional veggies except the celery. Yum. Thank you!
This is the first, and so far only, recipe that I have made from this site. While I found it to be very tasty, it was also VERY salty – and I think I have a fairly high tolerance for salt – probably given that you are not able to control the salt portions since everything comes from a processed package.
Definitely stay away from if you are salt sensitive.
Thanks for the feedback, Stephanie! You could also reduce the amount of seasoning to 1/2 packet each and add more to taste after crocking. Thanks again & Happy Crocking!
How do you measure .6 oz of the Italian seasoning or is that the amount that’s in the packet? I haven’t bought it yet. Thanks!
Do you put the Dry mix on before you brown the meat or is it better to brown the meat and then rub on the Dry mix?
I would brown the meat first, and then add the dry rub turning the roast to coat it in the slow cooker. Enjoy and Happy Crocking!
Thank you for answering so quickly-I am making this tomorrow.
Merry Christmas
I made this roast tonight and it was soooo yummy. The only adjustment I had to make was on the peppercorn packet. I couldn’t find it so I substituted Mc Cormick’s Montreal Steak seasoning packet. Thank you so much for sharing! And I love the app 🙂
I put my roast in the crockpot this morning. I couldn’t find the peppercorn and garlic packet so I used garlic & herb and half a pack of a chipotle red pepper packet. I put quite a few vegetables in there and I put them at the bottom based on comments above, but the 1 cup of water (I actually did 1 1/2) did not cover the vegetables even. The water isn’t even touching the meat…Should I add more?
It should work fine… the meat will make it’s own broth too!
Is this gluten free??? This is my favorite recipe for roast… I recently had to go gluten free and I’m still learning what is and what isn’t gluten free
Sorry to say this one is not gluten free Kendra! If you check on my website at GetCrocked.com, and do a search on the upper right hand corner of the page for gluten free, a few will come up. I am just starting to add more recipes. Hope this helps .. 🙂
Thanks for the quick response! I am going to try substituting some stuff and see how it turns out. ☺️
Would this work with a whole chicken? If so, how does the cooking time change?
This is a family favorite in our house. Instead of the McCormicks Peppercorn and Garlic seasoning packet I use the McCormicks Beef Gravy mix, along with the Ranch and Italian seasoning mixes. I have left out the vegetables and when the meat has finished cooking I shred it with two forks. Put meat on some nice rolls (like a hard roll). Use the juice to dip sandwich for a French Dip sandwich. Excellent!
This is an awesome recipe! I added some garlic cloves to make it nice and garlicy. 8 1/2 – 9 1/2 hours on low is perfect. I take out the roast and make gravy with the juices, shred the meat and put this on top of baked potatoes. Add some steamed veggies and you have an incredible meal. Once you make it, you will make it again and again. So many times crock pot recipes lack flavor, but not this one! Thanks!!
Thank you Tam! Appreciate your feedback, always great to her success stories… 🙂
I do a similar recipe. I use a package of onion soup mix and can of cream of mushroom soup. Great gravy. Will try this soon.
