Ingredients
1 c. butter, 2 sticks3/4 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 c. flour
11 oz. caramel bits, pkg
1/2 T. sea salt
Salted Caramel may be just one of my favorites, that is why when I found this recipe for Slow Cooker Salted Caramel Bars, I just had to make them.
- Coat the bottom of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray.
- Beat together butter, sugar and vanilla with your electric mixer.
- Once combined well add egg and salt.
- One cup at a time add flour until dough ball forms.
- Cover the palm of your hands with flour to form two balls, making one ball a little over half of the dough.
- Press the larger dough in the bottom of the crock.
- Continue to dust palms of hand with flour to keep the dough from sticking.
- Evenly spread the caramels over the dough in the bottom of the slow cooker. (If unable to find bits, unwrap and cut caramels in bits and spread over dough. If you have to cut in bits you may want to do this first before you make the dough, as it will take some time.)
- Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel layer.
- Top off by scanting the sea salt over the top.
- Cover. Cook covered on Low for 2 1/2 – 3 hours.
NOTE: Let the bars cool before removing from slow cooker.
Serve in small bars! YUMMY!
Optional: A Facebook Friend suggested adding Chocolate Chips to this recipe!

what size crock is this best in? I have an oblong bigger one and a regular size round one, input?
Could I use caramel dip instead of caramel bits? I’m snowed in & have every ingredient except for the caramels! I do have dip though (like you would use for apples)
Sounds like you have a plan. I’ve not used the caramel dip, but I would think it would work also. Please post back and let us know how it turns out. Enjoy and Happy Crocking!
What are caramel bits? Is that the wrapped caramels that are little squares? Or is it like a chocolate chip but caramel? Thanks!
You can use the large squares that are wrapped in paper, but you would need to cut each one into bit size in order for the caramel to melt properly. Hope this helps! But they also have them in the stores, you might ask your grocer. 🙂
I’d like to see an answer to Sandy’s question about crock size. I also have the same two she mentioned…which one would work better?
Hi Mandy, I would use the oblong slow cooker, as it will make more bars, but you may need to watch a little not to burn them. You just need to know your slow cooker and how it crocks. They are delicious! Enjoy!
Do you think maybe unsalted peanuts (chopped) would be a good ingredient? Either on the caramels or mixed in with the second half of the dough?
Hello… I love it when others make a recipe their own, and nuts will work great with this recipe. Just please post back and let us all know how it turned out. 🙂
For the butter ingredient what is 1.c 2 sticks mean? How muChef butter do I need?
Cathy each stick of butter is 1/2 c., so it takes 2 sticks of butter, and the recipe calls for 1 cup. I just stated that it takes two sticks of butter to equal 1 cup. 🙂
This is in my crock right now and the butter coming to the top is rather significant. Anyone else have this issue? What to do?
437 calories and 21.6 grams of fat!!! Are you seriously suggesting we eat or serve this! Too much of both. Have you tried any versions that would cut the calories and fat? Would not serve to my family as is. Not to mention carbs and sugar?!
It’s a wide, wide internet. Perhaps you could use your time to find a recipe more to your liking, rather than criticizing ones you do not intend to make.

how many people do you think it would serve? i could prob eat the lot myself mind but in reality? 4-6?
You will find the serving size on the upper right hand corner of each page, but happy to share this serves 10.. Enjoy!
Calories shmalories! I cannot wait to try these! I need a treat for a pot luck and this sounds like a real crowd pleaser. When they are done do I let them cool in the crock or take out right away?
Thanks Bobbi! When I make them I usually turn the crock off, and about let them rest for about 10 minutes, and then I remove them. They are so YUMMY! Happy Crocking! 🙂
I just received one of the new “Casserole Cookers” – about the size of a 9×13 pan – would this work in that or would it be too thin?
Hello Andrea, I believe you may need to double the recipe for the Crock-Pot Casserole Cooker! I love my casserole slow cooker… 🙂
This was a mess. Way too much butter and caramel and the top will never crisp up like the photo shows. Lots of good recipes from this site but this one didn’t work at all. I used my oblong crock btw.
Janet it is messy due to the Caramel, but it is delicious. I’ve made this several times and always a hit. I believe I use my round slow cooker for this recipe! Hope you will make it again. So YUMMY!
I made this recipe yesterday. I used my oblong cooker, followed the recipe exactly as written, used regular carmels quartered. I cooked for 2 1/2 hours, took lid off and cooled for 30 minutes. Served with a scope of vanilla ice cream on top. We are going to add chocolate chips next time for a twist.
Yummylicious 🙂
Adding the chocolate chips is a great idea Shenna! Thanks for the tip! I’ve added this as an option to the recipe Shenna! So glad to hear another success story! 🙂
Very disappointed. Not a keeper..recipe turned out just no taste for all those calories..we dumped them…
So sorry Janie, not sure what happened, as we love them. 🙁
I am going to Veganize this recipe and try it. I will use a flax egg and vegan marg of course and see how it goes. I just looked at the nutritional (lol) values so I will definitely be sharing this dessert with others. Thanks and it sounds awesome.
Steph
This is awesome Steph! Please post back and let everyone know how your conversion worked for this recipe! Happy Crocking!
[…] these are made in crock pot and the creator of recipe’s picture looks way different. Doesn’t seem feasible to get many square items out of a crock pot surface. http://www.getcrocked.com/2014/02/01/slow-cooker-salted-caramel-bars/ […]
If made in the casserole slow cooker you will get the squares! Happy Crocking for GetCrocked.com!
