Slow Cooker Turkey Sloppy Joes

  • Cooking Time:

    3-4 hours
  • Servings:

    6

Ingredients

1 T. vegetable oil
1 onion, large, finely chopped
2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
1-1/2 lb. ground turkey
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. chili powder
2 tsp. packed light brown sugar
8 oz. can tomato sauce
1/4 c. water
1/2 c. ketchup
1/2 tsp. hot sauce

Using ground turkey instead of ground beef reduces the fat in this recipe for Slow Cooker Turkey Sloppy Joes.  You can sub beef or even ground chicken if you prefer.  Either way, this easy recipe is a pleaser and easy to double or triple for a crowd.

    1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute the onion and garlic until softened.
    2. Turn heat up to medium high and add the ground turkey, salt and chili powder. Cook until turkey is no longer pink, about 5 minutes.
    3. Transfer the mixture to your slow cooker. Stir in the brown sugar, tomato sauce, ketchup. water and hot sauce.
    4. Cover. Cook on Low for 3-4 hours.

Serve on buns.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think it would be really helpful if you could let us know what size crockpot you use for a specific recipe. I just put all the ingredients in for the sloppy joes, and it only fills my crockpot about 1/4 of the way. I’m worried it won’t cook properly now. 🙁

I just want to say thank you for that little bit of info about how full the crock pot should be! I never knew it had to be over 1/2 full.
I have, I assume, a rather large crock pot (a large rectangle shape), and find things cook very quickly, especially chicken. From now on I will make sure it’s filled a lot more. 🙂 Thank you, and I am loving your recipes!
